Dear Friends and Members of the Ontario Kendo community,

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season with family and friends.

It’s unfortunate that the new variant prevents us from launching the new year with our annual Kendo Ontario New Year’s Godo Keiko but I hope this message will serve to communicate our appreciation for your support in 2021 and welcome the Ontario Kendo community into 2022.

We wish to thank the membership for the ongoing support. At the beginning of 2021, Kendo Ontario made the commitment to keep our community together and provide sessions so that motivated members could continue their Kendo development during the shutdown months. To meet that challenge, our Advisory Group organized and provided 7 online Kendo seminars that were hosted by various Sensei and covered a wide range of themes and topics. We also introduced a Guest Instructor pilot project program whereby guest instructors would visit and conduct dedicated online sessions via zoom for interested clubs. The individual sessions attracted up to 70 + attendees each with visitors from around the world and over 6 dojos registered for the Guest Instructor program.

With regards to ‘outside dojo’ activities, we held a special General Meeting and updated the membership on the status of the Ontario Kendo Federation o/a Kendo Ontario as a corporation in light of changing legislation. This represented an enormous endeavour by both the Executive Committee and Board and we want to thank the membership for the support and approval to proceed with the presented plans.

As we look to 2022, we remain confident in Kendo in Ontario as shown by the tenacity and fighting spirit of our members in 2021. Despite the ongoing Covid related challenges, our members continued to take on and find different ways to maintain their training throughout the year through online sessions, outdoors practices in parks and parking lots or finding new indoor facilities when faced with new restrictions at their traditional rental facilities. This fighting spirit was demonstrated across the province by large and small clubs and members of all ages.

Need further evidence of our members’ passion for Kendo? Over 100 Kendo practitioners registered to participate at the Canadian Kendo Federation’s Eastern Grading event in Toronto last November and 2 new Kendo clubs actually started in the Greater Toronto Area in 2021.

I believe that the start of 2022 will be precarious given the rising case numbers. However, I firmly believe we are heading in the right direction and am confident that our Kendo community will continue to adapt and find its way back to the dojo in 2022.

Kendo Ontario will continue to host events throughout the year as restriction lighten. We are also working on a number of ‘out of dojo’ initiatives to help promote the growth and development of Kendo in Ontario.

Similar to 2021, we will be hosting our annual General meeting in late January on Saturday January 29th. Details will be provided shortly to Dojo Leaders and Administration. Please join us as we welcome your input and feedback.

Happy New Year to All,

Bryan Asa
Kendo Ontario President

 Hello Kendo Ontario Community,

We hope everyone is healthy and well.

Kendo Ontario continues to promote Kendo during these ‘Covid’ times by hosting online events that keep the Kendo community connected and provide insights toward the development of Kendo for its members.

We are pleased by the increased Kendo activity by the different clubs in Ontario as restrictions are being lifted.

The session will review the general criteria for each grade level as well as the sharing of some thoughts and insights from past examiners. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

While we anticipate that those intending to register for the upcoming exam will be present, we encourage all Club and Dojo Leaders and non-registering exam members to attend.

The event is open to all ages and all levels.

Hello Kendo Ontario Community,

We hope all is well and you are enjoying the summer.

The recent trends are positive and we all look forward to practicing together again in the dojo in the near future.

As previously announced, the 2021 Team Canada Programme ended on June 28 with the formal cancellation of the World Kendo Championships originally scheduled for 2021.

Over the past 3 years, the Team Canada prospects and Management invested significant time and energies in continuing their practices even throughout the COVID period to represent us.

In addition to their training, the TC2021 Program members visited several dojos (prior to the COVID outbreak last year) and hosted several dedicated online events for members of the Ontario Kendo community, especially our junior members.

Before the launch of the new 2024 Team Canada program (scheduled to start on July 30), we wish to show our appreciation to the Ontario Team Canada representatives by hosting an online Team Canada 2021 Appreciation Event on Thursday July 22 at 8pm EST.

Please join us in acknowledging and showing our appreciation to our Ontario Team Canada Representatives!!

Hello Kendo Ontario Community,

We hope everyone is healthy and well.

Kendo Ontario continues to promote Kendo during these ‘Covid’ times by hosting online events that keep the Kendo community connected and provide insights toward the development of Kendo for its members.

With the arrival of warmer weather and vaccines, we can see a reasonable path back to the dojo and regular Kendo practice.

While we do not expect to return to the dojo soon, this is the ideal time to start mentally preparing for the return.

Kendo Ontario is pleased to announce that an online session hosted by Shigemitsu Kamata Sensei will be held on Sun May 16 @ 10:30-12pm.

The theme of the session is “Opportunities to Strike”. Shigemitsu Kamata Sensei will share his thoughts and insights on the various scenarios and patterns related to this theme. During the course of the seminar, he will use online videos and his own experiences to demonstrate and support his thoughts.

The session is open to all ages and everyone is encouraged to join. Note: Content will be generally more advanced.

Greetings Kendo Ontario Community!

We hope everyone is healthy and well during these challenging times.

It’s unfortunate that Covid-19 is preventing us from practicing Kendo together through traditional means in the dojo. However, Kendo Ontario endeavours to provide opportunities for members of the Kendo community to improve their development of Kendo through online seminars and events. This month, we are holding a session dedicated to the understanding and development of Women’s Kendo.

Open Practice and Panel Discussion

Please join us for an Open Practice and Panel Discussion to learn from some of the leading women Kendoka in Canada.

Both the practice and the discussion will be centered around longevity in Kendo and how to foster lifelong Kendo as both a player and as a leader in the kendo community.

We welcome and encourage men and women of all skill levels to this event as it will be open to any and all adult Kendoka who would like to gain insight on not only promoting and developing lifelong kendo but also women’s Kendo within their dojos.

The session will be hosted by Kyrene Kim Sensei of Etobicoke Kendo club. We are pleased to announce that the event will be joined by a panel of several of the top Women Kendoka in Canada including Junko Ariyama Sensei (6 Dan, Montreal Kendo Club), Makiko Ara Sensei (6 Dan, Renbu Kendo Club), Yuko Miyamoto Sensei (5 Dan, Toronto Kendo Club), Akane D’Orangeville Sensei (5 Dan, McGill Kendo Club), Juneko Kurahashi Sensei (4 Dan, Renbu Kendo Club).

Date: Sunday April 25th

Time: 2:00pm – 3:30pm EST / 11:00am – 12:30pm PST

Hosted By: Kyrene Kim Sensei and Kendo Ontario

Itinerary: Kendo Practice 2:00pm – 2:45pm, Suburi, Footwork, and Strength Building, Panel Discussion 2:45- 3:30pm

Equipment: Please wear comfortable workout clothes as we’ll be doing some physical exercise. Practice will be geared towards a small space as we’re all joining from home. Feel free to bring a water bottle and a yoga mat.

Registration: Please send an email to kyrene.s.kim@gmail.com with “April Kendo Ontario Event” in the title, then your name Dan and Dojo to receive the Zoom link no later than Saturday April 17th.

We believe this is a very unique approach to an important area of development. As an Instructor, I look forward to learning more and encourage all eligible members as well as other Instructors to attend.

Thank you for the ongoing support,

Bryan Asa

Hello Kendo Ontario Community,

We hope you and your family and friends are healthy and safe.

Kendo Ontario continues to promote Kendo during these ‘unprecedented times’ and is pleased to extend an open invitation to visit a ‘Zoom’ practice hosted by members of the Team Canada Program. The practice will consist of a mix of Kendo drills and workout drills and is open to all age groups. Some of the content may be challenging but we encourage all participants to try and follow along within their capacity. Similar to previous open zoom sessions, this represents an excellent opportunity for members of the Kendo community to see what others are doing to continue their Kendo development during these Covid times.

It’s unfortunate that we cannot practice together in the dojo, but we hope these sessions continue to keep the Kendo community connected and further the individual Kendo development of its members. Please see the information below and encourage all members from your club to join us.

Invitation: Open to ALL Age Groups !

Date and Time: Sunday February 28 @ 10:30 – 12:00 noon

Host: Members of the Team Canada Program

Preparation: Shinai, workout clothes, water bottle and yoga mat (recommended)

Zoom Link: Please see your Dojo Leader for the specific zoom link

Special thanks and acknowledgement to the members of the Team Canada Program for sharing their online practice with the rest of the Kendo community.
