Morito Tsumura sensei, a pillar of Canadian kendo and a beloved teacher, passed away in October 2025. Widely recognized for his decades-long dedication to Canadian kendo community, Tsumura sensei was instrumental in building and nurturing kendo in Canada for the past six decades.
Coming to Canada from Japan in 1967, Tsumura sensei brought with him not only a high level of technique and competitiveness, but also the deep traditions of kendo and a passion for sharing martial arts as a means of personal growth, respect, and intercultural dialogue. Over his more than 50 years as a teacher, he created a welcoming, rigorous environment that emphasized both technical excellence and character development. His leadership extended nationally, and his lifelong service and dedication was recognized by the Canadian Kendo Federation with Hanshi shogo, kendo’s highest honours, in 2012.
He was a key founding member of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre Kendo Club in Toronto where he was the head instructor and Shihan for more than 40 years. As well, he supported the founding of the University of Toronto Kendo Club in 1976. He was Shihan of Jung Ko Kendo Club, Markham Kendo Club and an advisor for many.
He made a point to visit Canada from coast to coast, visiting almost every club and dojo across the country, mentoring countless students and instructors who now carry his teachings forward in clubs across the country.

He represented Canada as a competitor in the 1973 (Los Angeles, USA) and 1976 (Milton Keynes, England) World Kendo Championships, leading Canada to second place both times. He also led the National Team as Coach and Manager for many World Championships

Tsumura sensei’s legacy is felt in the achievements of his students, many of whom have represented Canada at the World Kendo Championships, instruct and inspire new generations. His gentle wisdom, tireless commitment, and community spirit shaped the values and direction of Canadian kendo, leaving an indelible mark on Kendo in North America.

The Canadian kendo community mourns his passing and celebrates a life dedicated to leading by example and living the ideals of kendo.
His memorial service will be held Saturday, November 8th, 2025 at Highland Funeral Home
